India’s Anuradha Devi wins silver medal in 10m air pistol


India’s Anuradha Devi won the silver medal in the women’s 10m air pistol event at the ISSF World Cup 2024 in Cairo on Friday.

The 33-year-old Devi, making her ISSF World Cup debut, shot 239.9 from her series of 24 shots in the final and finished behind Greek shooter Anna Korakaki, the Rio 2016 Olympic champion in the 25m pistol. Korakaki managed to shoot 241.1 in the final while Irina Yunusmetova of Kazakhstan claimed bronze with a score of 219.2 from 22 shots.

Rhythm Sangwan, who secured an Olympic quota for India at the Asian Championships, scored 197.3 in her 20 shots to narrowly miss out on a medal with a fourth-placed finish. 

Earlier in the day, Sangwan topped the qualifying round with 584 points while Devi finished eighth with 575 points. Olympian Manu Bhaker did not make the final after scoring 572 for 18th place. 

Bhaker will be in action in the 10m air pistol mixed team shooting event with partner Ravinder Singh on Saturday. Sangwan will team up with Ujjawal Malik. Bhaker and Sangwan will also compete in the women’s 25m pistol event.

Meanwhile, Sagar Dangi was the only Indian shooter to enter the men’s 10m air pistol final but ended up sixth with a score of 158.3 in the final after 16 shots. Dangi qualified for the final after finishing fifth in qualifying with 582 points. Ujjawal Malik (579) and Ravinder Singh (577) finished outside the top eight.

The Cairo meet is the first stage of the ISSF World Cup this year for rifle, pistol and shotgun shooters. It will conclude on January 31.
