Borders teen wins gold at Scottish archery championships

Peebles High School pupil Izzy Wilson shot her way to the gold medal at the under-14 women’s Bare Bow Scottish Indoor Archery Championship in Stirling.

The 13-year-old finished top of the pile – and now is aiming for selection with the country’s under-21 squad.

Izzy first took up the sport while giving it a bash on holiday and now often trains as much as three times per week with her club Penicuik Archery and as a guest for Peebles-based Tweeddale Archers.

A delighted Izzy said: “This is the highest age group that I’ve competed at and I’m delighted to have won. I didn’t really know what to expect going into the event, but I’m happy I won.

“I’ve now got competitions coming up where I have to give three scores to see if I can get into the Scotland under-21 team which would be amazing. I’ve not represented Scotland in an age group before so it would be brilliant if I could do that.

“My coaches at Penicuik, Gillian Imrie and Naomi Thompson, have been brilliant with me and helped me get to this stage.”

She added: “I was on holiday in Wales when I was around 11 and they had archery in the park. I give it a try and really loved it and wanted to continue with it. I had to wait a while to get into the beginners’ course but it was great and once I started, I just wanted to keep going.

“I train with Tweeddale on a Monday and at Penicuik on a Friday night and Sunday morning, if I’m not playing football.

“The season’s just changing from indoors to outdoors. I have to shoot a longer distance for outdoors, some competitions are 50 metres when you only shoot 20 indoors. I haven’t really tried that yet so it’s going to be a new experience that I’m looking forward to trying.”

Penicuik Archers will be hosting a stall at the Penicuik Hunter and Lass Festival on May 30 where you can try archery. Tweeddale Archers are also set to run a beginners’ course in May.
