There are few moments in the precious metals industry that truly feel historic. For the SD Bullion team, receiving an invitation to visit The Royal Mint in Llantrisant, Wales, was exactly that kind of moment.
As collectors ourselves, stepping inside one of the world’s oldest and most respected minting institutions felt less like a factory tour and more like entering living history. From the thunder of presses striking silver Britannia coins to conversations with the talented men and women responsible for producing millions of ounces of bullion every year, this visit gave us—and by extension, our customers—an extraordinary behind-the-scenes look at the craftsmanship, innovation, and heritage that define The Royal Mint.

A Warm Welcome to Wales
During our exclusive visit, I was joined by SD Bullion COO Cole Keller as we toured The Royal Mint’s production facilities and interviewed key members of the mint’s leadership team. Among them were Andrew Dickey, Director of Precious Metals, and Christian Burge, Head of Operations for Consumer Operations.
From the moment we arrived, the excitement was palpable. Watching millions of ounces of silver and gold transformed into beautifully struck Britannia coins is something every bullion collector dreams about witnessing firsthand.
And now, through this partnership, our customers can experience it alongside us.
The Britannia: Britain’s Flagship Bullion Coin
The Britannia coin program is more than just a bullion series—it is one of the most recognizable symbols in global precious metals investing.
First introduced in 1987 for gold and later expanded into silver in 1997, the Britannia has become synonymous with purity, elegance, and trust. Even more remarkable is the fact that Britannia herself traces back nearly 2,000 years to Roman coinage under Emperor Hadrian around AD 119.
Standing beside trays overflowing with freshly struck silver Britannia coins, Christian Burge shared the staggering scale of modern production.
According to Burge, The Royal Mint is producing between 8 and 9 million ounces of Britannia silver annually, with silver serving as the primary driver of bullion demand. Gold production, while smaller in volume, still reaches approximately 1 million ounces per year.
Seeing these operations in person gives collectors a whole new appreciation for the effort required to maintain such extraordinary quality standards at global scale.
Watching the Mint in Action
One of the most unforgettable parts of our visit was watching the presses operate in real time.
Only a few feet apart, silver and gold Britannias were being struck using different minting technologies designed specifically for each metal. Massive high-impact presses powered the silver production lines, while specialized hydraulic squeeze presses handled gold bullion striking with incredible precision.
Collectors often see finished coins in capsules, tubes, or monster boxes, but witnessing the journey from raw precious metal to finished product is something entirely different.
Rows of untubed silver Britannias sat gleaming under factory lights before eventually being packaged and shipped to bullion dealers around the world—including SD Bullion.
For precious metals enthusiasts, it’s hard not to feel a sense of awe standing inside a facility where history, engineering, and artistry collide every single day.
Innovation Meets Tradition
What impressed us most was The Royal Mint’s relentless commitment to continuous improvement.
Andrew Dickey explained how the mint constantly evaluates press technology, operational efficiency, and production processes to improve output while maintaining the quality collectors expect.
That dedication to innovation is perhaps most visible in the Britannia’s groundbreaking security features.
In 2021, The Royal Mint introduced what many consider the world’s most visually secure bullion coin. The updated Britannia design includes four advanced security elements:
- A latent image that shifts between a trident and a padlock
- Surface animation that mimics rolling waves
- Intricate micro-text
- Tincture lines on Britannia’s shield
Andrew Dickey emphasized that these security measures are increasingly important for investors seeking authenticity and peace of mind in global bullion markets.

Exciting Things Ahead for Britannia Collectors
Perhaps the most exciting revelation from our visit was hearing about the future of the Britannia series.
According to Andrew Dickey, 2027 will mark two major milestones:
- The 40th anniversary of the Gold Britannia
- The 30th anniversary of the Silver Britannia
The Royal Mint hinted at major celebratory plans already in development, making the next few years especially exciting for collectors and investors alike.
We were also thrilled to hear more about the growing lineup of fractional Britannia products. With precious metals prices rising, The Royal Mint has expanded its offerings to include fractional silver and gold Britannias, including 1/10 oz silver Britannia coins now available through SD Bullion.
This allows newer investors and collectors greater access to one of the world’s premier bullion programs without sacrificing quality or security.
