Even after collecting jewelry for over ten years, I still find that buying fine jewelry online isn’t always easy. Mainly because it’s hard to know what’s worth it. There are karats and carats to think about. You’ve probably heard about the all-time-high price of gold. (Something you bought a year ago might’ve doubled in price since.) So what might seem like a deal (say for Black Friday) could just be the pre-price-raise price you’re paying.
All that said, if you can make the investment, fine jewelry — which means pieces made from solid gold (yellow, rose, or white), sterling silver, or platinum, some of which could include gemstones (both precious and semiprecious) — is something that’ll last a lifetime and will certainly make a much-appreciated Valentine’s Day gift. Although a lot of fine pieces come with a four-figure-plus price tag, you don’t actually have to spend a fortune to get yourself (or someone else) a piece. I hunted down the best fine jewelry under $500 from everywhere I could think of — e.g., places that we’ve written about, have been recommended to me, or are a personal favorite. I made sure to include all kinds of special pieces here, from hoops that are like a Matisse cutout for your ears to a diamond ring inspired by a childhood crush. We added a few new ideas ahead of Valentine’s Day. We also checked the availability of every piece of jewelry in this guide. As of publication, everything should arrive by Valentine’s Day.
A few of Thanks Dad!’s recent arrivals are different cuts of garnet, the birthstone for January.

Unlike the standard diamond solitaire, the Pinprick is setting free. It appears to be floating in the air — with the help of the post made from 14k yellow gold.

“It has been said that Colin Firth is ‘the thinking woman’s heartthrob,’ and this, too, is Ted Muehling as jeweler,” says illustrator Joana Avillez. You can always tell what’s a Muehling, be it a rice kernel, acorn, or berries.

Getting one of Marla Aaron’s locks — which aren’t unlike hardware-store carabiners — is a rite of passage for any jewelry collector. They can be connectors, charm holders, or clasps. The second-cheapest lock is the Babylock (the Spring Lock comes first), while a Mega Lock can go for upwards of $40,000.

I regularly see Ten Thousand Things’ mini split-heart charm on my editor, Hilary Reid — and while her turquoise heart is a special order (with a lead time of a few weeks), the jade is ready to ship.

Or there’s Ten Thousand Things’ cut-heart charm — while the split imitates a heart cut in half, the cut shows two hearts on top of each other. Quite romantic (or perhaps I’m just feeling sentimental).

In the family of greens our writer Erin Schwartz describes as “natural but a little freaky, a little sour: If a normal green calls to mind healthy ferns and forests, these shades come straight from bogs and sulphuric hot springs.” (And, as they say, “everything in your mammalian brain is telling you not to eat them. Yet …”)
