Masego’s ‘Navajo’ Certified Silver In The UK

Navajo, the 2017 track by Jamaican-American singer Masego, is now certified Silver in the United Kingdom.

According to the British Phonographic Industry (BPI), the song was issued the Brit Certified Silver Award on Friday (March 1) after selling over 200,000 units in the UK, as measured by The Official Charts Company.

Produced by J.L.L., a Jamaican whose real name is Jean-Andre Lowell Lawrence, the song’s beat was inspired by Singers Unlimited’s Emily and was first used by Royal Blu on the track How Can I.

Masego picked it up after for Navajo, which was later sampled by Drake on Certified Lover Boy’s opening track, Champagne Poetry (2021).

“Sampling shows such an appreciation of your work,” J.L.L. previously told the Observer.

“It is the same way I felt about Singers Unlimited — when I heard it, it was just a beautiful moment in time when a part of the track just speaks to you and you just have to loop it and do whatever it takes to emphasise that part which means so much to you. ”

Masego, whose real name is Micah Davis, hails from Waterhouse, St. Andrew, and had migrated to New York at the age of four.

In 2022, Mystery Lady— a track he teamed up with rapper Don Toliver on— was Certified Gold in the United States by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) after it reached the sales and streaming equivalent of 500,000 units sold in the US.

The artist recently concluded a tour of Europe which saw him visiting major countries including Sweden, Germany, France, the UK, Ireland, Portugal and Spain.

Next month, he will be in New York at the Blue Note Jazz Club for the ‘Jazz & Jokes’ series.

Masego previously collaborated with Shenseea on the IzyBeats-produced Silver Tongue Devil. The track formed part of the singer’s EP titled Studying Abroad: Extended Stay which was nominated nomination for Best Progressive R&B Album at the 2022 Grammy Awards.
