Considering that Laurent Ferrier produce relatively few watches, they have a surprisingly high number of collections and sub-collections. While their recent efforts have been focused on the Classic Auto and Sport Auto, one of the models that arguably established their direction and aesthetic focus for the past five years was the Classic Origin, popularising a more minimalist style for the brand. Now, on the brand’s 15th anniversary they are releasing a new edition, the Classic Origin Beige, which adds rose gold to the sub-collection.
The case is based on the existing Classic Origin models, which means a 40mm diameter with a smooth bezel and exceptionally thin lugs. It also has the characteristic ball shaped crown with fluted edges. Made from rose gold (technically a version of rose gold called red gold, that is unsurprisingly redder in colour) it has a much more luxurious style that emphasises its dress watch appeal.
For the dial, it’s in the titular beige colour, a nice off-white tone that pairs well with the golden case without being too brash or over the top. It keeps things just muted enough that the watch still feels minimalist despite its precious metal. The central Assegai hands and small seconds subdial are also presented in rose gold to complete the stylish update.
Beneath the dial is the manual winding calibre LF116.01. It operates at a 3 Hz frequency, which is relatively low by modern standards but is a favourite of watchmakers because it’s regarded as one of the most beautiful beat rates for a balance wheel. A lower frequency can also help extent the power reserve and the Laurent Ferrier Classic Origin Beige has an 80-hour power reserve. It’s visible through the exhibition caseback where you can see that the finishing is more minimalist in its implementation to match the vibe of the watch – featuring chamfered plates.
It’s another teaching in the lesson that you don’t have to reinvent the wheel each time you make a new watch. A stylish update and material change is sometimes all it takes to make an older model feel fresh. Though as this is Laurent Ferrier, a gold watch will likely have a price tag in the region of £70k.
