Newton Abbot Town Council has received national recognition after achieving Silver status in the National Association of Local Councils’ Award Scheme, with the certificate presented during a special meeting at Newton’s Place

The certificate was formally presented during the council’s Full Council meeting on July 15 after the authority achieved Silver status in the National Association of Local Councils’ (NALC) Local Council Award Scheme.

The award was presented to Mayor Councillor Louise Cooke by Freewoman Carol Bunday and Freeman Mike Hocking.

During the presentation, Mr Hocking said NALC Chair Iain Hamilton had praised the council for going “above and beyond its legal obligations”.

He also recognised Principal Administrator Linda McGuirk for coordinating the council’s award submission.

Accepting the certificate, Councillor Cooke thanked council officers for their work.

She praised their “relentless hard work” and said they played an essential role in ensuring the efficient running of local government.

Because of the recent heatwave, the Full Council meeting was held in Newton Abbot Museum at Newton’s Place rather than its usual venue in the St Leonard’s Room.

Closing the meeting, Councillor Cooke again thanked council officers for setting up a temporary council chamber in the museum at short notice.

The National Association of Local Councils’ Local Council Award Scheme recognises councils that demonstrate good governance, effective community engagement and continuous improvement.
