Rishikanta Singh Chanambam grabbed the spotlight at the 2026 Commonwealth Games as he won the first silver for India in Glasgow.
The Indian weightlifter registered a 121kg lift in snatch in the men’s 60kg category, which was a Games record, and 143kg in clean & jerk to earn a podium place. Malaysia’s Bin Kasdan Mohamad Aniq won the gold with a total lift of 273.

Rishikanta’s third attempt of 121kg did the damage, pushing past the 120kg mark that had stood as the benchmark until then. That mark didn’t stand alone for long, though, as Bin Kasdan matched it on his third attempt shortly after.
Bin Kasdan followed it up with another Games record of 152kg in clean & jerk, to take his total to a new CWG high.
Who is Rishikanta Singh Chanambam?
Growing up in Imphal West, Manipur, Rishikanta owes much of his rise to the training and support system offered by the Indian Army’s sports wing.
Things really came together for him at the 2025 Commonwealth Weightlifting Championships in Ahmedabad, where he walked away with gold in the 60kg category after totalling 271kg across his lifts.
It was a result that also stood as a new national record and secured his direct qualification for the Glasgow Games.
Glasgow 2026 marks his second appearance at the Commonwealth Games, having previously represented India at Birmingham 2022 in the men’s 55kg division before moving up to the revised 60kg category.
At the 2024 National Weightlifting Championships, he set a national snatch record of 124kg while still competing in the 61kg category.
