The Stories Inside the Rings: Why Every Mark Battuello Piece Begins as Something the Wearer Has Been Carrying | ELLE Canada Magazine

Most jewelry, in most lives, is bought rather than commissioned. The piece exists first; the buyer chooses it from a case, takes it home, and assigns it whatever meaning their life around it eventually gives it. Custom jewelry works the other way around. The story exists first. The piece is built to carry it. Mark Battuello, a self-taught artisan jeweler from Napa Valley, has built his practice almost entirely around the second kind of jewelry.

Symbolism is the starting point

Battuello’s signature pieces are custom inlay rings, made under his own name, Battuello Artistry. The inlay format means the band is constructed in sections, with different materials set into the surface so the visible face of the ring becomes a small composition. The format exists because it lets the maker put real symbolism into the piece itself, not decorative gesture. Materials that mattered to the wearer can be set into the band. Imagery the wearer asked for can be built into the surface.

Each piece begins with a conversation. The client describes what the piece is meant to mean: what relationship it commemorates, what milestone it marks. By the time Battuello sits down at the bench, the piece already has a story attached to it.
