Albie Jahovic, from The Judo Company in Stockbridge, clinched a silver medal at the Judo Tournament Venray, going up against some of Europe’s top young talent.
This tournament, now in its 51st edition, is one of the most respected junior judo events in Europe.
It regularly attracts more than 1,600 competitors from more than 30 nations, highlighting the scale of Albie’s achievement.
The young judoka fought through five tough rounds in a group of 21 boys, showing a level of skill and determination beyond his years.
He faced a series of Dutch and Belgian opponents, and won most of his matches by ippon, judo’s top-scoring technique – the equivalent of a knockout victory.
This technical skill and fearless approach earned him a place in the gold medal match.
Throughout the tournament, Albie was coached by his father, Jack Jahovic.
His guidance and support were crucial as Albie navigated a tough day of high-level international competition.
The father-and-son duo worked seamlessly, adjusting strategies and staying focused as Albie advanced through each round.
In the final, Albie was pitted against a highly skilled German competitor.
The match was closely contested, with neither athlete able to secure a lead in regular time.
The bout was pushed into golden score, where the first score decides the winner.
After an intense and evenly matched battle, Albie was narrowly defeated by a single yuko, securing him a hard-fought silver medal.
Despite the disappointment of missing out on the gold by such a small margin, Albie’s performance has boosted his growing reputation as one of the promising young talents on the judo circuit.
His achievement at Venray underscores his dedication and hard work and highlights his ability to compete successfully against some of the best young judoka from across Europe.
Albie’s dream of representing Great Britain at the Olympic Games relies on the backing of the community.
