The Phantom is back for his second act: Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Love Never Dies is returning to London in an award-winning concert production at the London Palladium this October. We spoke to Holly James, who plays Fleck, to discover more.
How are you feeling about joining the cast for the upcoming concert production of Love Never Dies?
For so many reasons, I’m incredibly excited! I’ve always been a huge fan of Phantom of the Opera, and to be back in London after eleven years for this beautiful sequel, with an amazing creative team and cast, is very special.
Can you tell us about the character of Fleck and what drew you to her?
Fleck is one-third of the Phantoms’ henchmen. Together with Gangle and Squelch, they help drive the show’s narrative and create a world that is eerie, dark and sometimes mischievous. As an actor, it’s always really interesting to take on quirky characters that have the ability to force you out of your comfort zone, and this particular role has been transformed so many times by so many artists that she lends herself to evolution and bringing new ideas of how to portray her into focus.
How does being part of a concert event compare to a traditionally staged production?
There’s not a lot of time to pull all the elements together, but in my experience with concert versions of staged productions, they are equally, if not more, exciting for the challenge. It means going with initial instincts and working together as a team to bring this exciting show to life.
You’ve worked in theatre all over the world, from Broadway to Japan. Are there many differences in the experiences?
Yes! The audiences. I’ve worked in the most beautiful theatres in the world and often the smallest houses to perform in, and ultimately, I can only recall the audience reaction. In Japan, the audiences can be super respectful and reserved, then at curtain call, full standing ovations and sometimes tears! The most supportive crowd. Broadway and London audiences are committed from curtain up, and you can hear the response almost instantly. Wherever I’ve performed in the world, theatre has always been most special when you can connect with your audience and storytelling, and music will always be a universal language.
Why do you think the stories of Phantom of the Opera and Love Never Dies have continued to enthral audiences for so long?
I can only speak for myself, but I was seven years old when my mum bought us tickets for Phantom of the Opera in London. My little brother was a month old, and we were told that my mum would have to sit in the theatre bar so as not to disturb the other theatregoers, so I sat by myself to witness my very first musical. I felt every emotion, and even at such a young age, I remember the sweeping and rich musical numbers, the spectacle and vastness of the stage, and the capacity to make you feel every emotion from every character. Truly unforgettable and, to this day, my favourite show.
