Keegan & Coppin Company Inc. is marking 50 years in business, a milestone the North Bay commercial real estate brokerage says reflects growth alongside the region’s business parks, technology companies, agricultural businesses and life science firms.
Founded in 1976 by Al Coppin and Jim Keegan, the company is based in Santa Rosa and has offices in Petaluma, Larkspur and Napa. Arguably the North Bay’s largest commercial property brokerage, the company has 36 agents, including 18 partners.
Al Coppin, co-founder, president and chairman, said commercial property is key to local prosperity.
“With business parks and available space for growth, companies grow and thrive and the economy grows,” Coppin said.
The company said its early market centered on land and initial development of business parks, including 463-acre Airport Business Park near Charles M. Schulz–Sonoma County Airport, Santa Rosa Business Park in Santa Rosa, and Oakmead Northbay and Redwood Business Park both in Petaluma. It later saw growth tied to telecom companies in those Petaluma parks, along with an enduring emergence of biotech and life science companies and professional and service businesses. Specialist agents also help residential developers find land for projects and ag interests find suitable vineyard and ranch land.
Leadership has moved into its next generation. Dave Peterson now is CEO. Brian Keegan heads recruiting, training and marketing. Shawn Johnson is managing general partner. Matt Storms manages the Marin County operation, while Russ Mayer oversees the Petaluma office.
Keegan & Coppin also operates property management and construction businesses alongside its brokerage work. Coppin previously has said those operations give its brokerage agents additional technical knowledge and allow the firm to offer services in-house.
Keegan & Coppin Builders, led by Zack Parker, operates as a general contractor and construction manager, including working with brokerage agents so owners and tenants better understand construction needs associated with commercial properties. Property management services include tenant relations, rent collection, regulatory compliance and contracting with vendors.
Recent company market data illustrates the scale of its two primary long-running markets. In the second quarter, the brokerage tracked nearly 60 million square feet of existing industrial, office and retail space in Sonoma County: 26.2 million square feet of industrial, 14.9 million of office and 18.9 million of retail. In Marin County, the company tracked about 22.2 million square feet across the same sectors: 6.4 million square feet of industrial, 6.7 million of office and 9.1 million of retail.
“It’s a fun business,” Coppin said in a company video. “You’re providing a service to the community. You’re building the infrastructure for the economy to grow.”
The company said it plans to continue using technology and artificial intelligence in property marketing and management.
