Absa launches Africa’s first digital-asset custody

What Absa just rolled out

Johannesburg-based Absa has launched a custody service that provides safekeeping, administration, and transfer of digital assets for institutional clients in South Africa. At launch, the service caters to asset managers as well as non-bank financial institutions and corporate clients.

Where the product stands today

Absa has regulatory clearance in South Africa and is live with support for Bitcoin, the XRP Ledger, Ethereum, and USDC. Rob Downes, head of digital assets in Absa’s corporate and investment banking unit, said, “Bitcoin is the predominant asset in custody.” He also noted the bank is working with clients to support “other crypto assets they would like to be custodied in South Africa.” Absa aims to expand support to additional assets over time.

Expansion plans and the market backdrop

Downes said, “We expect to extend this to other client segments in South Africa in due course, and are actively working on bringing the solution to some of our other African presence countries in line with regulatory approvals required.” According to the South African Reserve Bank, holdings in custody at Luno, VALR, and Ovex climbed to 25.3 billion rand by the end of 2024 (about $1.5 billion) – more than twice the level recorded at the start of 2023, when they were under 10 billion rand. Looking wider, forecasts put the global custody market at about $953.5 billion by 2026, with potential expansion to $4.38 trillion by 2033.

Why this could matter for your wallet

There is now a bank-run custody option for institutions in South Africa, with Absa planning to widen access to other client segments locally and working to roll it out in additional African markets where regulators sign off. For anyone tracking how crypto services are developing on the continent, the takeaway is simple: more regulated infrastructure is being built, and Absa says Bitcoin leads demand among the assets it supports.
