Springholm Primary children achieve UNICEF Silver Right’s Respecting Schools Award

The children of Springholm Primary have been working hard over the last year to gain the UNICEF Silver Rights Respecting Schools Award.

The aim of this is to ensure that the school is a safe and inspiring place to learn, where children are respected, their talents are nurtured and they are able to thrive.

In May, an external assessor visited the school and talked to groups of children and staff about their views on and knowledge of their rights. The school has a Rights Respecting Schools Award committee drawn from all age groups.

They had to talk about some of their favourite rights such as “children’s education should help them fully develop their personalities, talents and abilities. It should teach them to understand their own rights, and to respect other people’s rights, cultures and differences”.

The assessor judged that Springholm had indeed gained its silver award – and to make it extra special, the school received a visit from the council’s chief education officer Jim Brown, who officially unveiled the banner celebrating the award.
