Louis Vuitton updates the Tambour Convergence in steel

Louis Vuitton has introduced a new stainless steel version of its Tambour Convergence, swapping the precious metal cases of earlier models for a specially hardened steel that’s designed to keep its polished finish for longer.

First launched in 2025, the Tambour Convergence marked a milestone for LV as the first guichet-style watch fully conceived at its La Fabrique du Temps manufacture.

Its characteristic time display uses rotating discs to indicate the hours and minutes through an arched aperture with scalloped edges.

So far, the model has arrived in fully polished rose gold, then later an even more precious platinum version that was fully snow-set with diamonds and another rose gold piece that sported intricate guillochage patterning.

Given the amount of metalwork on show in the Tambour Convergence, one of the main wince-worthy qualms was how you’d actually avoid scratching it. That’s clearly something that Lous Vuitton has thought about, and for the new Mirror Steel edition, the maison takes things in a more everyday-appropriate direction.

The same super minimalist design is still there, but the key update is a proprietary steel treatment that increases the case’s surface hardness by almost six times compared with standard steel.

Rated at 1,130 Vickers, the material is designed to resist everyday scratches while maintaining its mirror-polished appearance.

Matthieu Hegi, artistic director of La Fabrique du Temps Louis Vuitton, told WatchPro: “The objective with the Tambour Convergence Mirror Steel was to keep the ice-cold feel of the scratch-resistant mirror effect entirely intact. It is an innovation that has been developed by La Fabrique des Boîtes at La Fabrique du Temps Louis Vuitton and a unique mastery in mirror polishing, while maintaining the strengthened aspect of steel.”

While steel might not sound as sexy as gold, there’s no less luxury going on. This hardened steel is incredibly difficult to work with, and it actually takes the maison’s artisans up to three times as long to finish compared to the rose gold.

The 37mm case (the same size as its predecessors) measures a sleek 8mm thick and features hand-polished surfaces, with sandblasted details inside the hollowed lugs.

Inside, the watch is powered by the automatic Calibre LFT MA01.01, La Fabrique du Temps Louis Vuitton’s first time-only automatic manufacture movement.

Beating at 28,800 vibrations per hour, it offers a 45-hour power reserve and features an 18K pink gold oscillating weight, visible through the sapphire caseback.

The hours and minutes are displayed on satin-brushed, rhodium-plated brass discs, with black numerals and indexes completing the dial.

Hegi explained: “The Tambour Convergence Mirror Steel has pure and distinctive aesthetics. It is a statement piece that beautifully showcases the audacity and innovation of Louis Vuitton watchmaking highlighted by a scratch-resistant mirror effect. It is very sophisticated, combining a vintage look with a touch of modernity in the treatment.”
