Belgium has had a very long association with the Modern Olympic movement since the country’s national team first participated in the games in 1900. The Belgian national Olympic committee was recognised as the official representative in 1906 and the VII Olympiad of 1920 was hosted the Belgian city of Antwerp, the only time the Games were staged in Belgium. The country has also sent a team to compete in the Winter Games first in 1924 and for most of these tournaments since. In 2024, the Belgian Olympic team will include 143 athletes who are set to compete in 18 sports from the opening ceremony in Paris on the 26th July until its official closing and handover ceremony on the 11th August.
The silver proof coins are produced by the Royal Dutch Mint at their facilities in Houten, Netherlands in association with the Royal Belgian Mint and designed by Iris Bruijns. The reverse side features a gold-plated Team Belgium logo on a raised surface and placed on a field on the left side. On the right side on a mirrored surface is a representation of ‘the Embrace’, which is the Belgian International Olympic Committee’s visual identity during the Olympic Games in Paris. This symbol represents two arms reaching out to envelop and embrace people, spreading the message of unity. The end of the arms cannot be seen to give the idea of infinity. The obverse side includes an effigy of HM King Philip designed by Royal Belgian Mint artisan Luc Luycx, facing right along with his crowned monogram placed to the right and text surrounding the likeness of the King which reads BELGIE – BELGIQUE – BELGIEN representing the official three languages of Belgium. The denomination 20 EURO is placed below the King’s effigy and the year of issue 2024 is shown in a vertical direction.
