TSSA warns Chancellor against rail infrastructure short-termism ahead of speech

TSSA today warned the Chancellor, Rachel Reeves, against “short-term” thinking over infrastructure ahead of her speech to Parliament today.

The transport union’s intervention comes against widespread predictions that Reeves will axe projects to fill a £20billion budget shortfall left by the previous Conservative government.

TSSA General Secretary, Maryam Eslamdoust, said, “Rachel Reeves has some difficult decision to make, thanks to the last fourteen years of Tory chaos. However, she cannot allow this to deter her from honouring Labour’s commitment to fix our railways for the benefit of passengers and tranport workers.

“Infrastructure projects such as HS2 and the electrification of the railways offer longer term tangible economic and environmental benefits for the whole country.

“Rachel Reeves must avoid the mistakes of the previous government which only ever thought short-term. Long-term investment in the railways will deliver long-term benefits for the whole economy. Funding for rail infrastructure should not be cut, or we’ll all end up paying the price.”
