Olympics LIVE: Golf resumes and Team GB latest as medals to be won in athletics, cycling and sailing

Josh Kerr claims silver in 1500m race beating Ingebrigtsen in a shocking finish

The Olympics continues with Team GB’s focus remaining on the track at both the athletics and the cycling on day 12 of Paris 2024.

Matthew Hudson-Smith’s form in his 400m semi-final marks him as a gold medal contender ahead of tonight’s final at the Stade de France, following memorable medals for Keely Hodgkinson and Josh Kerr over the past two nights.

Great Britain have also made a great start in the velodrome and can add further success this evening in the team pursuit. The men’s team will face Australia for gold later, and the women’s team led by Elinor Barker will try to match them this afternoon.

Last night, American Cole Hocker stunned world champion Kerr and reigning Olympic champion Jakob Ingebrigtsen to win a sensational 1500m gold, while Dina Asher-Smith and Daryll Neita missed out on a medal in the women’s 200m final by the barest of margins.

This morning, golf resumes Le National as the women’s strokeplay competition gets underway. Charley Hull and Georgia Hall lead Great Britain’s bid for gold, but the favourite is the world’s best player this year: USA’s Nelly Korda.

That was a bad round for Team GB with both divers messing up. If they want to challenge the Chinese (potentially for medals in the final) they need to nail all six attempts.

As things stand it’s the two Chinese divers, Wan Zongyuan (259.60) and Xie Siyi (250.15) who have the top two spots.

Jack Laugher (243.90) is now down to third with Moritz Wesemann (223.15) of Germany leapfrogging Jordan Houlden (219.50) into fourth place.

Both Brits are heading into the final for now but they’ll know they need to keep their levels up.

Now it’s Jordan Houlden’s turn to execute a reverse 3 1/2 somersault tuck. Jack Laugher nailed this dive a few minutes ago, what can Houlden do with it?

It’s okay. Perhaps not quite at the level of Laugher, he gets high but kicks out slightly too early and has to arch his back on entry to the water. The judges don’t miss that and it’s a score of 66.50, Houlden’s lowest effort of these semi-finals.

For Laugher, he goes for an inward 3 1/2 somersault tuck. It’s slightly easier in terms of difficulty but he doesn’t execute it as well as he could.

He pushes off the board and comes into the water on an angle. He’s not happy and the scores reflect that. A 69.70.

In diving the Chinese athletes are the ones you need to worry about. Wang Zongyuan absolutely smashes his second dive and edges away from Jack Laugher of Great Britain.

Wang leads with an overall score of 177.70 with Laugher just behind on 174.20.

Wang’s teammate Xie Siyi takes third place with a score of 169.15 while Jordan Houlden has moved up to fourth with a very solid 153.00.

So far so good for Team GB.

Houlden’s second dive is an improvement on his one from yesterday. It’s an inward 3 1/2 somersaults tuck with a difficulty of 3.4. The Brit gets a strong jump off the board but there’s a slight bend on his entry into the water though his splash his small.

He scores a 76.50 which is good enough for qualifying at the minute.

Laugher follows him again with a reverse 3 1/2 somersault tuck. The difficulty is 3.5 and he’s slightly angled on his way into the water. It’s a solid dive though with a good kick, reach and tuck.

87.50! Incredible. He is flying through these semi-finals.

After the first round of dives it’s good news for both British athletes. Jack Laugher tops the pile alongside China’s Wang Zongyuan with scores of 86.70 each.

Just behind them is China’s Xie Siyi who recorded an 85.00 with Mexico’s Osmar Olvera Ibarra the only other man to reach the 80s with his socre of 81.60.

Of the rest, Jordan Houlden leads the way in fifth place thanks to his 76.50. There’s plenty of dives still to come but it’s been a great start for the Brits.

Oh yes! Jordan Houlden is up first for Team GB with a 3.4 degree difficulty twist somersault that he nails! He leaps high off the board getting up around the five metre mark and performs the routine superbly. The entry into the water is strong and he’s scored a 76.50 which places him second.

Jack Laugher follows on the springboard with the same forward 2 1/2 somersault twist routine. Laugher leaps higher than Houlden and is equally, if not better, in the air.

He is better! By a long way too. Laugher scores a big 86.70 which puts him in first place.

Our focus is moving over to the aquatics centre now as Jack Laugher and Jordan Houlden look to reach the final of the men’s 3m springboard.

There are six rounds for this semi-final with the Brits full of confidence after the preliminary rounds yesterday.

Olympics 2024: Women’s Golf

After Charley Hull found the water at the first tee, the defending Olympic champion and USA star Nelly Korda kicks off her opening round with a drive that fizzes over to the right.

There’s a fortuitious bounce out of the rough and the ball finishes with a nice lay to approach the green with her second shot. Korda is away and is the big favourite to defend her title this week.

Keely Hodgkinson delighted to be seen as poster girl for athletics after Olympic success

Keely Hodgkinson has said becoming a poster girl for track and field would be an honour, as her coach called her a “superstar” who is ready to take on golden girl status.

It makes her the first British woman to claim Olympic 800-metre gold since Dame Kelly Holmes in Athens in 2004, and the third going back to Ann Packer in 1964.

Olympics 2024: Women’s Golf

Over at Le Golf National, Team GB’s Charley Hull is just getting her opening round underway. She’s playing alongside Australia’s Hannah Green and Rose Zhang of the United States.

Tommy Fleetwood took silver in the men’s golf, can Hull emulate him over the next four days?

She starts her round with a booming drive down which hooks over to the far left and seemingly lands in the water! Not the start the Brit would have been hoping for.
