After being told how close he was to winning, Wilde added: “Ah, nah, close isn’t good enough.”
The Boston supertri is a gruelling event that includes three 300m swims, three 4km cycles and three 1.6km runs. Yee won in 49min 2sec, with Wilde second and reigning champion Dorian Coninx third after picking up a five-second penalty. If any athlete falls more than 90 seconds behind the race leader at any point, they are eliminated.
At the Olympics, Yee reeled in a 15-second deficit to pip Wilde with the finish line in sight.
Yee said in Paris: “I’m not really sure myself [how I managed it], to be honest. It was just one of those magic moments where you hear about these Olympic moments and people finding extra stuff within themselves. It was just one of those where I just decided that I was going to give myself one last chance just to do it.”
