India has made a significant mark in the world of surfing by clinching the silver medal at the Maruhaba Cup, a team event within the Asian Surfing Championships 2024.
The event took place on Sunday, on Thulusdhoo island in Maldives.
The Indian team outshone strong competitors, including Chinese Taipei, to secure this prestigious position.
Notably, India claimed its first-ever Asian Games quotas in surfing just a day ago.
Indian surfers’ journey to silver
The path to the silver medal was paved by the exceptional performance of the Indian team, comprising Kamali P, Ajeesh Ali, Srikanth D, and Sanjay Selvamani.
They topped the table in the Heat 2 semi-final, having bagged a score of 32.16.
This victory placed them ahead of Chinese Taipei, who scored 29.70 and South Korea (27.74) in the semi-final.
Final showdown at Asian Surfing Championships
In the final round of the championship, the Indian team faced off against some of Asia’s top surfers.
Despite stiff competition, they managed to secure second place with a team score worth 24.13.
This placed them ahead of Chinese Taipei (23.93) and China (22.10), who finished third and fourth respectively in this intense competition.
The gold medal was won by Japan, who secured an impressive 58.40, demonstrating the high level of skill present in this championship event.
