BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WBRC) – Tuesday, city councilors approved $4.5 million in funding to help with improvements including street paving, sidewalks and walkways.
Crews are still working to construct the Birmingham Amphitheater just behind the old Carraway hospital site. However, the money for the improvements won’t just be used around the amphitheater, but around the entire old Carraway property.
Councilman Hunter Williams believes this work is an absolute necessity.
“Anybody who has driven through the Carraway area or what was formerly the Carraway area, they will know and understand the need if they escaped without a flat tire for an infrastructure investment in that area,” Williams says.
The project is not tied to the other $12 million in economic development incentives that the city has provided developers and city councilors say the improvements will only happen on city owned property.
“This is the actual city property. This is the sidewalks, the streets and the lighting. There is no money being spent on private property.”
Councilman Williams says he hopes the project is bid out within the next year and that time is of the essence with the amphitheater work slated to be completed next summer.
