Hong Kong bridge half-marathon gets platinum status, now city’s top-ranked race

The Bank of China Hong Kong–Zhuhai–Macau Bridge Half Marathon has been designated a platinum event by World Athletics, making it the highest rated race in Hong Kong.

According to the global governing body’s calendar for this season, the event has been upgraded from gold for November’s edition.

Platinum is the highest tier of race certification and gives the bridge run a higher grading than the more prestigious Standard Chartered Hong Kong Marathon, which is in the gold tier.

This year’s race is scheduled for November 15, and will cover the 13.1 miles (21 km) along the Hong Kong section of the bridge.

Kwan Kee, chairman of race organisers the Hong Kong, China Association of Athletics Affiliates, welcomed the upgrade, and it reflected the status the international athletics community placed on the event.

“This shows our race has achieved a certain level of credibility,” Kwan said. “We began applying for the platinum label earlier this year and succeeded after going through multiple rounds of evaluation by World Athletics.”
