Alasdair Gold has confirmed that Tottenham Hotspur are eyeing Sporting Lisbon winger Marcus Edwards as a potential option ahead of the summer transfer window.
Two weeks ago, it was reported by Correio da Manha (via Sport Witness) that Spurs have expressed an interest in bringing Edwards back to the club, six years on from his departure from Hotspur Way.
Marcus Edwards was once compared to Lionel Messi by Mauricio Pochettino
The report claimed that the Sporting star is keen to return to England this summer and explained that Tottenham would be able to sign him on a discount as they still have a 35 per cent sell-on clause on their former player.
Tottenham’s interest in re-signing the winger was subsequently backed up by A Bola last weekend, with the outlet asserting that Lilywhites could face competition from West Ham for the player.
The report stated that Sporting are willing to accept an offer of around €20m (£17m) for the attacker, which means that Spurs would be able to sign him for around £11m due to their 30 per cent discount.
Pochettino said back in 2016 to Sky Sports: “The qualities – it’s only looks, his body and the way that he plays – remember a little bit from the beginning of Messi.
“He’s small, he’s left-footed, I remember a little bit (Erik) Lamela when he was at River Plate, remember he had long hair, when he was 14, 15 years old, there is a lot of videos on YouTube that you can see, that he took the ball, didn’t give a pass and shot straight away.
“He (Edwards) is a very good prospect and potentially he can be a top player, but we need to be patient and tell him that he has a lot of talent, enough talent to be a top player, a great player. But now it’s how he builds his future, that’s very important. And it’s our responsibility to tell him.”
Tottenham are keeping an eye on Marcus Edwards
Gold has now confirmed that Edwards is very much on the radar of Ange Postecoglou’s men but he revealed that the North London club have not made any approach for the winger so far.
The journalist said on his YouTube channel: “From my knowledge, I know that Spurs are at least keeping an eye on the situation of Marcus Edwards as a potential option.
“I’m not saying it’s a move that is definitely going to happen and no approach has been made to Sporting as of yet or when I last checked in it hadn’t, but he’s being considered as a potential solution to that problem (lack of homegrown numbers).”
Spurs Web Opinion
Edwards would be a useful squad option for Postecoglou but having extended Timo Werner’s loan, I suspect Spurs will now be after a versatile forward, who can operate out wide as well as through the middle, rather than an out-and-out winger.
