Duchess Sophie is highly regarded as one of the best-dressed royal ladies in the world, and it’s easy to see why. The mother-of-two, 61, has an innate way of subtly nodding to trend-led items in a classic, timeless way.
As a fashion editor who has been specialising in royal style for over eight years, it can be quite the job deciding which ensemble of Sophie’s I rate the highest. After much deliberation, I have decided on this beautiful frosted dress from 2022.
Then known as the Countess of Wessex, Sophie looked resplendent in a rose gold design for the late Queen Elizabeth’s Platinum Jubilee. Pulling off head-to-toe pink with major aplomb, this metallic number was feminine yet directional, with its gathered, three-dimensional power sleeves and gentle, body-conscious cut.
Designed by royally-loved label Suzannah London, the eye-catching ‘Alessia’ dress was an elegant choice featuring a pretty bow detail at the back. Accessorising to perfection, she added drop earrings, a tonal clutch, and a coordinating fascinator to complete her look.
The mother of Lady Louise Windsor and James, Earl of Wessex, added a similarly hued fascinator as she attended the National Service of Thanksgiving at St Paul’s Cathedral on 3 June 2022. Although Sophie was 57 when she wore this design, her timeless style is everlasting, carrying her through to her 60s and beyond.
Modest fashion icon
Sophie has winning fashion credentials that are often copied by royal fans. However, the mother of two is modest when it comes to this public admiration. At a fashion event in 2018, the royal made a rare comment on her sense of style, playfully remarking: “I can’t claim that my track record in fashion has always been as good as it is today, but you know, we learn in time.”
Three years later, during a special engagement with the British Fashion Council in 2021, she quipped: “Britain is an island – albeit a big island – and if you look at what royal women have worn over generations, they have made huge fashion statements reflected from foreign shores, and that’s what helps make our style.”
When asked whose style she most admires, she said: “Angelina Jolie – I always think she looks amazing – and also Queen Rania of Jordan always looks stunning.”
