Chennai: Customs arrested two women for smuggling 12kg of gold, valued at 8 crore, after they arrived from Dubai on an Emirates Airlines flight early Tuesday morning. The team, acting on a tip-off, was on high alert and detained the women on suspicion.During questioning, the women’s responses were found to be inconsistent, leading to a thorough search. Officials found gold concealed in their undergarments. Further inspection of their checked-in luggage revealed additional gold hidden in a secret compartment in their suitcase. The total value of the gold is estimated at 8 crore. Further investigation is on. Meanwhile, income tax officials at Chennai airport seized foreign currency worth 2.8 crore from a man scheduled to fly to Bangkok on Monday night. The currency haul included US dollars worth 1 lakh and the remaining in euros. The passenger was intercepted based on specific intelligence, and the seized currency was handed over to Customs for further investigation.
