Hampshire celebrates Duke of Edinburgh’s Gold Award winners

The 36 recipients attended a ceremony organised by the DoE’s Hampshire Forum where they received special certificates from HM Lord-Lieutenant in Hampshire, Nigel Atkinson, who is also the president of The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award in Hampshire.

The ceremony was held at The Great Hall and saw more than 150 people in attendance, featuring classical guitar entertainment by Kian Roensdorf, a member of Hampshire County Youth Orchestra.

The Gold Award winners come from various groups including the Scouts, Girl Guides, Girls Brigade, and Army and Police cadets.

To earn the accolade, each recipient undertook activities including volunteering, learning new skills, and completing expeditions as far as Snowdonia and the South Downs.

Mr Atkinson said: “Yet again Hampshire’s young people have demonstrated a huge level of commitment and determination to gain this very prestigious award.

“They should be very proud of their achievements.

“There is a continuing need for leaders to train the next generation of young participants and I would urge them to continue their good work and enjoyment by offering their time and skills as volunteers for DoE.”

Professor Khalid Aziz, vice-president of Hampshire Duke of Edinburgh, said: “What a wonderful example yet again of high achievement by young people in Hampshire. It would be good to see even more young people taking part next year.”
