Sharlene Mawdsley has proclaimed that Ireland’s success in the 4x400m mixed relay European Championship final last night was ‘everything I’ve ever dreamed of.’
The Tipperary woman led Ireland to victory, producing a scorching final leg to take Ireland over the line in first place with a new national record of 3.09.93 after fine work from teammates Chris O’Donnell, Rhasidat Adeleke and Thomas Barr.
All four members of Team Ireland were overcome with emotion at the end of the race, quite literally jumping for joy on the track once the magnitude of their achievement had settled in.

Taking to social media after the race, Mawdsley posted pictures of the celebrations along with the caption: “Everything I’ve ever dreamed of.
“European mixed 4×400 champions.”
“It’s everything to me and everything to the team,” Mawdsley told RTE after the race. “The whole stadium was amazing. The Irish fans turn up every time and it was just super. I did not think we would win, honestly; it’s so amazing.
“I can’t wait to step up on the podium and hear the national anthem. There will be a few tears.”
The 25-year-old is in the midst of the best season of her life and has turned in a string of amazing performances already this year and has proven that she can compete with the very best in the World.
