Silver and gold medals for Llandudno Boxing Club at UK championships

The event, held over two days, pits the Welsh, English and Scottish national champions against one another, with the host nation having two boxers entered in each weight category.

Welsh youth champion Alfie and Welsh junior champion Mitchel Jones both represented Wales.

On day one, Alfie took on Scotland’s Luca Flynn in the 60kg category.

He dominated the bout but was only awarded a split decision win, with four judges to one in favour of him.

Next up was Mitchel, against England’s three-time champion Morris James in the 70kg category.

Mitchel started the contest quickly, outscoring his opponent behind a long jab and check hooks.

As the bout progressed, he got stronger, and won all three rounds; in front of a delighted crowd, he was awarded a 5-0 unanimous decision win, mening both Llandudno boxers progressed to the final the next day.

First up in the finals was Alfie, who was matched against the Callum Seedhouse of England.

In a cagey first round, both boxers looked to score behind composed and accurate scoring and it ended quite an even affair.

Alfie really stepped it up in the second round, pushing his opponent back behind aggressive and sustained attacks.

The third round was an untidier session, with Seedhouse tiring and looking to hold and Alfie continuing to press on.

Ahead of the decision, the crowd and Alfie were confident of the win, but Seedhouse was awarded the 3-2 split decision win and the gold medal.

This was a third GB silver medal for Alfie in the last three years, and all were by a split decision.

Mitchel took on Scotland’s Sam Brown in his final.

Brown, who had a bye into the final and was coming off three stoppage wins himself, opted to start the contest fast and aggressively.

He immediately opened up on Mitchel, trading punches, but the bout was finished within 40 seconds, with Jones scoring two heavy standing counts against Brown.

In the first exchange, Mitchel landed a heavy right hand and left hook and with Brown being held up by the ropes, he landed six more shots before the referee could intervene.

The second count came quickly as Mitchel lined his man up behind the jab and scored with an accurate and strong left hook and straight right-hand combination.

He was emphatically awarded the gold medal and GB championship.
