The special reason why a Nuneaton telephone box has turned gold

A telephone box in Nuneaton town centre has once again changed colour – this time to gold. It has become a focal point for those passing by in Coventry Street.

Last year the previously red box was painted blue and transformed into a Tardis before then turning green to promote a pantomime at the Abbey Theatre. Now it has been painted gold – and it is for another special reason.

Inside the glass door on the old telephone box is a poster that explains the special reason why it has become ‘The Golden Box’. It states is for ‘compassion, optimism and love’.

Inside the telephone box is a specially crafted piece of bamboo art. The artist behind the poster explains: “The colour provides a rich and warm feeling and helps to shine a light on things around it. Gold is an optimistic colour that can also represent wisdom and empathy.

“It helps to encourage knowledge and a deeper perception of ourselves and others. Gold is also seen as generous, confident and loving. Within the bamboo sculpture inside this golden space are objects that symbolise my own experience of becoming gold again.”

It continues: “Wrapped in self doubt, the inability to focus, sleep or have compassion and love for anything: this artwork reflects on a state of being that I and all women or have experienced.

“For too long, this has been ignored and misunderstood. Thanks to medical science, the compassion of women to share and the understanding and help of loved ones. I’ve been able to value myself once more, have optimism and love for life once more.
