Seven people are in custody for allegedly dealing in precious metals and the illegal possession of precious metals worth over R300 million.

The arrests of the suspects, aged between 34 and 67, were made on Wednesday by the Hawks and other SAPS units in Rustenburg and Brits.

“Their arrest follows information received about theft of suspected platinum group material at a mine in Rustenburg.

“The alleged stolen platinum was kept in Rustenburg and Brits for sale,” a spokesperson said.

The raids were conducted simultaneously at the two separate venues, according to the Hawks.
