With only two days to go in the 2024 Paris Olympics, the United States is all but a lock to close the Summer Games as the nation that will have more medals than any other nation. However, there is a real battle brewing in the gold medal category. With China going plus-one Friday, there is a deadlock at 33 entering the final weekend.
Both countries will expect to add to their tally on Saturday. The Americans will look to the men’s basketball team, women’s soccer team and the men’s and women’s 4×400-meter relay teams as being the events where they can pull ahead. China will hope that cycling, diving, table tennis, and weightlifting can provide them with the cushion they’ll need going into Sunday.
Looking ahead to the final day, China has but one path to a gold whereas the United States has three including women’s volleyball, and what, to this point, has been the surest of sure things. The last sporting event of the Paris Games is the women’s basketball final between the United States — a squad that hasn’t lost since 1992 — and host nation France at 9:30 a.m. ET Sunday morning.
Through Friday, the United States remains far ahead in the total medal count with 111. In additional to the 33 gold medals, the United States also leads the way in silver and and bronze with 39 in each category. Overall, China is second with 83 today medals, with Great Britain (57), France (56) and Australia (48) rounding out the top five.
The United States entered these Games with the most medals ever won in the Summer Olympics. The U.S. also holds the record for most gold medals won in a single games with 83 captured in 1984, one of the country’s host years that took place as the Soviet Union led a 12-nation boycott of the Los Angeles Games. Such lofty totals will not happen this year. In Paris, America is simply looking to build upon the success that it had three years ago when the U.S. brought home 39 gold medals, 41 silvers and 33 bronze.
