Last weekend, Chesterfield native Dana Kellogg and teammate Frank Ike finished ninth place at the men’s luge doubles World Championships in Altenberg, Germany. The World Championships occur every non-Olympic year.
Kellogg and Ike were the fastest American sled in the doubles competition, which earned them a spot on the Team USA relay team the next day. The American relay team consisted of three-time Olympian Summer Britcher, Kellogg/Ike, three-time Olympian Tucker West and Chevonne Forgan/Sophie Kirkby.
When it was all said and done, Team USA came away with a silver medal, standing as their first podium finish in the discipline since the 2020 World Championships in Sochi, Russia.
Kellogg, a 2018 graduate of Smith Vocational, and Ike – who were competing in their first World Championships – had a lot to do with the runner-up finish.
“This was our first World Championships as a doubles team, and to be able to pull through to get a relay spot, and then come through with a medal, feels really good,” Ike said.
“As Frank said, this is our first Worlds, and to come away with a silver medal feels great,” Kellogg added.
Team Austria and Team Latvia are typically dominant in the luge relay, but the Americans edged out both for their silver medal with a time of 3:11.227. Only Germany (3:10.869) placed higher, bringing home the gold medal.
An unforgettable experience for Kellogg was capped off by a fantastic performance on the biggest stage he’s ever competed on.
