Double silver for Makaira Wallace | World Sports

Makaira Wallace took Trinidad and Tobago’s medal count at the Junior Pan American Track Cycling Championships to five yesterday, when she won silver in the Women’s 500 metres event in Lima, Peru.

Sprinter Wallace clocked 35.075 seconds to finish second behind Lorena Cuadrado of Colombia (34.674), with another Colombian, Mariana Perez taking third in 36.754.

The result yesterday, mirrored what happened on Friday evening when Wallace also won silver in the Women’s sprint.

Wallace won her semi-final ride-off with Perez to progress to the final. But in the gold medal ride-off, she was unable to get past Cuadrado. The Colombian, who had been the fastest qualifier, beat Wallace in straight rides.

Before the evening session yesterday, the TTO medal tally included three silver and two bronze earned by Wallace (two silver), the men’s team sprint team (silver) Danell James (keirin bronze) and Jadian Neaves (points race bronze).

And Jelani Nedd was bidding for another medal last night as he went into the Men’s sprint semi-final ride-off against Colombian Diego Bautista.

In another result earlier yesterday, endurance cyclist Neaves lay fourth after two of three events the omnium with 72 points, only two behind the riders above him from Colombia (Angel Marin), Brazil (Marq Ferreira) and Chile (Vicente Aliaga).
