Greek artistic swimmer Evangelia Platanioti has added a silver medal to the gold she won on Saturday to build upon an impressive display at the World Aquatic Championships in Doha.
Ms Platanioti earned the silver after being awarded 253.2833 points in the solo free routine, bringing her overall tally of world medals to four as she continues to establish herself as a national icon of the sport.
The Greek swimmer lost out to Canada’s Jacqueline Simoneau, who scored 264.8207 points to earn her nation their first gold medal in artistic swimming in 33 years.
Belarus’ Vasilina Khantouskaya finished in third with 245.1042 points while another Greek athlete, Vasiliki Alexandri, who competed for Austria, finished in sixth place.
The silver medal is another impressive result in an historic performance from Ms Platanioti at this event, who on Saturday won the gold medal in the solo technical routine with a score of 272.9633 points.
She became the first ever female Greek gold medallist in the process as well as only the second Greek to win gold in any category (Youth, Junior or Senior) at the World Aquatics Championships.
This performance puts the Greek swimmer in good stead ahead of this year’s Summer Olympics in Paris.
Ms Platanioti will no doubt be keen to perform well after disappointingly missing the last edition in Tokyo after positive cases of COVID-19 forced the entire Greek artistic swimming team to withdraw from the Games.
