Even after rising 4.7% this past week, Fortuna Silver Mines (TSE:FVI) shareholders are still down 47% over the past three years

While it may not be enough for some shareholders, we think it is good to see the Fortuna Silver Mines Inc. (TSE:FVI) share price up 27% in a single quarter. But that doesn’t change the fact that the returns over the last three years have been less than pleasing. In fact, the share price is down 47% in the last three years, falling well short of the market return.

Although the past week has been more reassuring for shareholders, they’re still in the red over the last three years, so let’s see if the underlying business has been responsible for the decline.

To quote Buffett, ‘Ships will sail around the world but the Flat Earth Society will flourish. There will continue to be wide discrepancies between price and value in the marketplace…’ One flawed but reasonable way to assess how sentiment around a company has changed is to compare the earnings per share (EPS) with the share price.

Fortuna Silver Mines saw its share price decline over the three years in which its EPS also dropped, falling to a loss. Due to the loss, it’s not easy to use EPS as a reliable guide to the business. However, we can say we’d expect to see a falling share price in this scenario.
