It was a successful trip to the Bay State Games for the West girls volleyball team over the weekend.
Team West — which featured Frontier’s Olivia Machon, Bailey Martin and Abigail Hernandez — opened the tournament on Saturday with a 25-21, 25-20 loss to Southeast before splitting with Central by scores of 25-21, 13-25.
Later on Saturday, West beat Metro by scores of 25-15, 25-14, before splitting with Northeast by scores of 26-24, 26-28.
West opened Sunday by splitting with Coastal (16-25, 25-21) to earn the No. 4 seed after round robin action.
In the quarterfinals, West advanced by beating Central, 25-21. The run continued in the semifinals, where West fought back to beat Southeast (18-25, 25-17, 25-12) to reach the finals.
In the gold medal game, West was unable to get by Coastal, falling 25-10, 25-14 to settle for a silver medal.
The West field hockey team — which featured Greenfield’s McKenzie Boswell, Henley Gilstrap and Gloria McDonald as well as Pioneer’s Riley Thayer — went 1-3 in group play on Friday and Saturday.
West opened with a 2-1 loss to Central on Friday and followed with a 2-1 loss to Coastal later in the day.
On Saturday, West fell to Southeast, 2-1, before getting a win against Metro, 3-1.
That win allowed West to play in the bronze medal game on Sunday against Coastal, though Coastal walked away with a 3-1 victory. West finished the tournament in fourth place.
