Hertfordshire town sees the silver lining to summer’s rain clouds with a colourful umbrella display

Umbrellas have been working overtime this year, and they are yet to have taken a summer break. One town just over the border between Cambridgeshire and Hertfordshire has seen the cloud’s silver lining, however, and used umbrellas to brighten up their skies.

More than 100 umbrellas in a rainbow of colours are hanging in Royston. The installation was organised by Royston First, the town’s Business Improvement District (BID), and funded by businesses.

Paul Brown, BID manager of Royston First, said: “We are delighted to introduce summer decorations to Royston in the first year of our new term. This was a key part of our business plan and it is great to already hear so many positive comments from both businesses and local residents.

“Not only will the umbrellas brighten up our the town but they will also increase footfall as everyone comes to see this amazing display. We just hope that it isn’t an indication that we’re in for a wet summer!”

The display is expected to be in place until early September, and free ‘umbrella parades’ for children will take place during the summer holidays. During these events, children and families will be invited search for umbrellas hidden within the shop windows.

The parades will run between July 19 and August 3, and from August 16 to August 31. Take a look at the multicoloured display below.
