One of Derbyshire’s most popular farm shops has won yet another award for its fantastic produce. Croots Farm Shop in Wirksworth Road, Duffield, has received more plaudits for its excellent new pie after being named among the UK’s best back in March 2023.
The new pie, stuffed with steak, mushroom and cracked black peppercorn took the reserve champion award at the annual British Pie Awards in the beef and vegetable pie category. Croots has a huge variety of homemade pies that it sells in its shop, including Steak and Ale, Chicken, Ham and Leek, Lamb and Mint and, of course, the award-winning Steak, Mushroom and Cracked Black Peppercorn.
Back in November, the shop picked up another two prizes at the Great British Food Awards for its Croots Pork Pie and its Steak and Ale Pie. This latest accolade was awarded during British Pie Week at the annual British Pie Awards, held in Melton Mowbray – of course – and hosted by the Melton Mowbray Pork Pie Association.

Kay Croot, who runs the farm shop, said: “We were thrilled to win the reserve champion award for our new Croots Steak, Mushroom and Cracked Black Peppercorn Pie at the British Pie Awards, narrowly being pipped at the post by the Champion pie. The British Pie Awards are the crème de la crème of pie awards and we’ve previously won gold medals for our Steak and Ale Pie and Croots Mince Pies there.
“The Croots Steak, Mushroom and Cracked Black Peppercorn Pie is a relatively new pie but it’s fast becoming a big favourite with our customers, and we’re delighted that it hit the spot with the award judges too.” The new pie is freshly made on the premises at Croots by the bakery team, using top quality locally reared meat.
Croots opened in 2008 and sells a range of home-made and locally produced food and drink, as well as items from further afield. Back in 2021, Croots had a major revamp that saw the business introduce new signs, create a new logo, and redecorate its cafe and the outside of the store. Just months later, the farm shop sadly announced the sudden death of its owner and co-founder, Steve Croot.

Kay continues to run the farm shop following the sad loss of her husband Steve. The business has continued to grow and, evidently, continued to produce high-quality produce pleasing to both customers and judges.
The farm shop is open Monday to Saturday from 9am to 5pm and from 10am to 4pm on Sundays and bank holidays. The café is open Monday to Wednesday from 9am to 3pm, from Thursday to Saturday from 9am to 4pm, and on Sundays from 10am to 3pm.
