New Silver Proof and Colour Coins Celebrate Contenders to Next Summer’s UEFA EURO 2024

UEFA, The governing body of European football has invited Spain’s Royal Mint to participate in the official collector coin program for the UEFA European Football Championship. Three-time winners Germany will stage the UEFA European Championship in 2024 having been chosen to stage the 17th edition of the UEFA European Championship at a UEFA Executive Committee meeting in Nyon, Switzerland on 27 September 2018. It was West Germany who hosted the 1988 tournament, but this will be the first time Germany has staged the UEFA European Championship since reunification in 1990. As the host nation, Germany are positioned in Group A and will occupy position A1, which means they will therefore play in the opening match at the Munich Football Arena on Friday the 14th June. Germany/West Germany have featured at every EURO since 1972. West Germany won the 1972 and 1980 editions, while the reunited Germany triumphed at EURO ’96.

The format will be the same as for UEFA EURO 2020 with 24 teams representing their country, the top two in each of the six final tournament groups will proceed to round of 16 along with the four best third-placed finishers. Spain’s first match will be played the day after the first game, on the 15th June against Croatia. The Spanish national team became European champions as hosts in 1964, in 2008 in Austria and Switzerland, in 2012 in Poland and Ukraine and are currently the only team to win two consecutive tournaments. Ten host cities including Berlin, Cologne and Frankfurt to name a few during the tournament which opens on the 14th June and closes with Berlin’s Olympiastadion hosting the final on Sunday the 14th July 2024.

The silver proof and colour coins depict on the reverse an image of a footballer in action off the ground and as he kicks a soccer ball – perhaps scoring the game’s winning goal. The logo of the tournament which denotes Germany as this year’s host is shown above the player. Surrounding the central area, the shape of the stadium’s roof and the stands of a soccer stadium are reproduced in colour and with the flags representing the national teams. In the centre is the coins’ denomination of 10 EURO with the distinctive mintmark of the Spanish Royal Mint, a crowned ‘M’ located just to the lower left. The obverse includes a left-facing effigy of HM King Felipe VI with the legend FELIPE VI REY DE ESPANA placed above his image. The year of issue, 2024 is seen below the King’s likeness.
