Plough Inn, Silver Street, City Walls Road in 1960s and 2024

(Image: Newsquest) This large city centre pub, dating back to at least the early 18th century, was previously the Archangel and Angel.

Found at the end of the street opposite the Cornmarket and near St Martin’s Gate, the striking black and white exterior was only added in the 1920s or 30s.

In the 19th century it was an integral location for carriers transporting goods or people and was also known to hold inquests on occasions.

NOW: The same location below in Worcester in 2024, now in City Walls Road, and part of the site has become the Worcester Donation Centre for The Salvation Army.

The construction of City Walls Road in the 1970s was key as many buildings in Silver Street made way for it, including the pub in 1972.

It has not been the only Plough pub in the city over the years and one — a popular real ale destination — currently remains elsewhere in the city centre in Fish Street.

The Plough City Walls site eventually became a a Renault garage, Jaguar dealership H A Fox from 2001 until 2006 and then the Bedroom Centre before being taken on by The Salvation Army in 2022.

The new St Martin’s Quarter rose up behind it in 2012.
