A Pokemon fan’s incredible illustrations provide a glimpse of theoretical crossover remakes between the series’ second generation games, Pokemon Gold and Silver, and Generation 5’s Pokemon Black and White. The mockups were shared online, where they received praise and sparked a discussion on what remakes of the titles would actually look like based on past releases.
Following the success of the original Pokemon trilogy that became available to North American audiences in 1998, franchise creator Game Freak launched Pokemon Gold and Silver a year later in the developer’s home country of Japan as its second generation entries. These Nintendo Game Boy classics later received critically acclaimed remakes, Pokemon HeartGold and SoulSilver, for the DS on the originals’ 10th anniversary in 2009. As Pokemon Gold and Silver near their 25th anniversary, one fan has envisioned a new remake initiative for the Generation 2 games that features an interesting twist.

In a recent post on the Pokemon subreddit, a user named EliteRobo04 shared their concept of Nintendo Switch crossover remakes between the second generation games, Pokemon Gold and Silver, and Generation 5’s Pokemon Black and White. These theoretical remakes, Pokemon Black Gold and Silver White, would utilize the players’ ability to access two regions as their primary gimmick, EliteRobo04 explained. Those who play Pokemon Black Gold would start in one of the best Pokemon regions, Generation 5’s Unova, while Pokemon SilverWhite players would be dropped in Generation 2’s Johto region.
Community members praised EliteRobo04’s mockups for Pokemon Black Gold and Silver White, which included character sprites and even covers for physical releases on the Switch. The illustrations were so well done that some Reddit users believed them to be real. Others discussed what they thought remakes of Pokemon‘s second and fifth generation games would look like. One community member claimed that their hopes for a proper Generation 5 remake were dashed following the release of Pokemon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl for the Switch in 2021. Despite being solid games, many found Pokemon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl disappointing.

Rumors of new Pokemon games set in Johto and Unova have been circulating recently. These rumors could be addressed in 2024’s Pokemon Day event set to take place on February 27 or in a new Nintendo Direct that is also expected sometime in February.
Game Freak should be acutely aware of its fans’ desire to return to Johto and Unova. Pokemon fans have already come up with many potential titles for the rumored remakes of Pokemon Black and White, such as Pokemon Deep Black and Vast White, among many others.
