SALT LAKE CITY (KUTV) — Firefighters are making progress on the Silver King Fire burning near Marysvale, Utah, in Piute County, though containment remains low at 8%.
The blaze, started by lightning in early July, has consumed 17,648 acres approximately 3 miles west of Marysvale.
Silver King Fire Update
As of Monday, 703 personnel are working to control the fire.
Fire officials reported moderate behavior on Sunday with no significant growth. Crews focused on strengthening containment lines and protecting structures in key areas.
An Interagency Hotshot crew bolstered defenses on the north and east sides of the fire, particularly in the Deer Creek area (not to be confused with Deer Springs, which is another large wildfire currently burning in the state).
Firefighters set up pumps to protect structures and worked to reduce fuel around the Elk Ranch.
On the northwest corner, a woodchipper cleared cut vegetation near the Silver King mine, helping to maintain the fire line. Crews also worked to strengthen lines and mop up on the southeast corner.
In Bullion Canyon, firefighters used chainsaws to clear roadways and maintain access, according to Utah Fire Info. Firing operations continued on the south side to prevent the fire from advancing into Cottonwood Creek drainage.
Weather Conditions
Unfortunately, weather conditions are expected to worsen this week, with a drying trend forecast to begin Monday. There’s a chance of thunderstorms and gusty winds through Monday, which could complicate firefighting efforts.
The entire state was seeing fire danger risks ranging from moderate to very high, according to the Utah Department of Natural Resources.
Closures
The Fishlake National Forest implemented Stage 1 Fire Restrictions on Friday, limiting where and what type of fires visitors can have in designated areas. Castle Rock Campground is still open.
