Labour promised to renationalise the railways in last year’s general election and have said that contracts for all rail operators will not be renewed when they run out but will be run centrally instead.
At a meeting of rail leaders, transport secretary, Heidi Alexander highlighted that cancellations on the state run Northern trains were at more than 10 per cent.
Northern runs trains throughout Cumbria and is one of the county’s major public transport operators.
Northern is currently run by the Department of Transport but north east mayor, Kim McGuinness has said that mayors should take control of the operator to help improve services.

In her speech, Ms Alexander also called for a reform of fares and ticketing to help passengers get the best price.
The scheme to renationalise the railways has been backed by Cumbria’s Labour MPs.
