Scott Lincoln (coach: Paul Wilson) won silver in the men’s shot put at the European Throwing Cup, Leiria, Portugal across the weekend, as eight athletes battled the elements at the annual continental competition.
The City of York athlete – looking to improve upon the bronze medal he won at the Cup in 2021 – led the competition from the third round when a throw of 20.95m put him head and shoulders above the rest of the field. 20.98m on his penultimate throw edged him further ahead with one effort remaining, however, Italy’s Zane Weir – the reigning European Indoor champion – launched the shot out to 21.55m on his final throw to seal the win, and the British athlete succeeded with the silver medal.
Zara Obamakinwa (Mark Chapman, Blackheath & Bromley) produced a solid display as she ended the U23 women’s discus contest in fifth overall. The World U20 Championships finalist was stepping up to the U23 category for the first time and opened with 51.41m which would ultimately be the best throw of her series. The event was won by Turkey’s Ozlem Becerek in 55.07m.
In the senior women’s shot put, Amelia Campbell (Zane Duquemin, Thames Valley) earned sixth place after throwing 17.51m in the poor conditions on Saturday afternoon. In the B final, European U23 silver medallist Serena Vincent (Mike Winch, City of Portsmouth) was second with a mark of 16.20m, just one centimetre behind Emilia Kangas of Finland. That placed her 10th overall in the combined standings on her senior debut for GB & NI.
In the men’s hammer A final, Jake Norris (Paul Dickenson, Windsor Slough Eton & Hounslow) threw over 72m twice in his series with the furthest measuring in at 72.23m which placed him ninth overall in the competition.
There was a season best for Katie Head (Paul Head, Newham and Essex Beagles) in the women’s hammer as she threw a best of 65.24m in the B final of the hammer. When combined with the A final, she finished 16th overall.
After opening his season in Australia and New Zealand last month, Nicholas Percy (Zane Duquemin, Shaftesbury Barnet) threw a best of 59.60m in the men’s discus A final for eight place overall.
In the final event of the competition, Ben East (Luke Angell, Team Kennet) contested the U23 men’s javelin, and he ended the competition in 13th position with the furthest throw of his series coming on his second attempt, recording a mark of 65.63m. He retired from the competition in round five.
