Silver for Ireland at Women’s Octagonal Matches

Just like the men a fortnight ago, it wasn’t to be for Ireland in the Championship match of the Women’s Octagonal Matches as they lost out to host nation Spain in Costa Ballena.

Spain recorded a comprehensive 8-1 win over the Girls in Green to secure the title.

In the race to five points, it was the Spaniards who roared into a 3-0 lead thanks to a session whitewash in the morning foursomes.

The impressive Mairead Martin and Kate Lanigan suffered their first loss as a pair all week going down 2&1 while Olivia Costello, Caoimhe O’Grady, Kate Dillon and Anna Abom all lost out.

Lanigan ended a strong week for herself on a high with a win on the 18th in the singles matches to register Ireland’s only point of the final.

There were also narrow defeats for Martin and Annabel Wilson while Jessica Ross, O’Grady and Costello were all beaten as Spain ran out comfortable winners.
