Silver Medalist Naomi London honored by hometown community


Residents of Belle Vue, Vieux-Fort, are filled with anticipation for the promising future of Naomi London, a rising sprint sensation who hails from their community.

At just 17 years old, London has already left an indelible mark, securing silver medals in both the 100m and 200m events at the prestigious 2023 Carifta Games held in Barbados.

Her achievements were further underscored by her recognition as the Student Athlete of the Year at the recent national sports award ceremony.

On Sunday, March 25, the Belle Vue Development Community and the Community After School Program came together with loved ones and stakeholders to honor London in her hometown. A billboard was unveiled in her honor, proudly showcasing her notable accomplishments.

During the ceremony, heartfelt tributes were delivered by various speakers, highlighting her remarkable journey and potential.

Numerous residents of Belle Vue expressed their belief in London’s extraordinary abilities and their conviction that she is destined for greatness.

They envision a future where she views the sky not as her limit but as her starting point.

Mrs Petra Jeffery Mitchell, a resident of the community and a teacher of the Belle Vue Combined School who taught London, said: “For me, I expect her to continue being great. She has been going places and doing things. That humble little individual I know as a student is still there.”

“I expect nothing but to see her go to the Olympics soon. I expect her to go pro when the time comes,” she added.

Jeffery-Mitchell expressed the collective anticipation of the entire community for Naomi London’s future achievements, recalling fond memories of her early days of running at the tender age of 5. Describing her as a delightful child with a captivating smile, Mitchell’s words resonate with the community’s pride in her journey.

Bercia Mathurin, a relative of London, shared her optimism for the burgeoning sprint sensation’s future, citing her impressive progress to date.

Mathurin expressed immense joy at witnessing the unwavering support of the entire community rallying behind London.

Damian Raymond, who also expects London to compete in the Olympics one day, said: “We expect greatness from her at the Olympics. We expect her to continue focusing on her goal.”

She emphasized that, with the supportive network surrounding her, London possesses the potential to achieve remarkable feats.

Anastasia Louis affirmed London’s capacity for greatness, underlining the united backing of the entire community in facilitating her success. Louis depicted her as humble, kind, agreeable, and courteous, traits that further endear her to the community.

Another resident asserted that London possesses all the necessary attributes to bring pride to the nation in the realm of athletics.
