Simmons breaks record with silver, Schultz takes bronze

BOZEMAN, Mont. — The 2024 Big Sky Championships wrapped up today for Eastern Washington track and field with two more Eagles getting on the podium. Caitlin Simmons earned a gold medal and Savannah Schultz earned bronze for Eastern.

The EWU women’s team placed eighth on the team standings, with the men in ninth.

“Egypt is still the Big Sky Jump Queen in my book, winning three of the four horizontal jumps and placing second in the fourth is dominant & should put her in a great spot to advance to the NCAA Finals in Eugene,” Director of Track and Field Erin Tucker said. “I know Coach Jo and Egypt wanted to sweep and that will be the goal next year for sure!”

For the fourth time this season, Simmons broke the triple jump record after a 12.88m mark to place second at the championships. Her previous record was 12.78m set last month in Long Beach, Calif.

Schultz nearly set a personal record after posting a 4.14m mark in pole vault to place third. The senior holds the third-best mark in program history, recording a 4.16m vault in the 2021 season.

Suzi Woodall placed fourth with a 3.99m mark as a freshman.

“Hats off to Sav getting on the Podium once again, I know her and Coach Allison wanted to get the win so he could ride off into the sun set,” Tucker explained “It wasn’t in the cards today; we did get a glimpse of what’s in store for the future with Suzi Woodall just missing the podium. To score this high in her 1st conference championship is awesome especially after missing indoor with an injury!  The Sky is literally the limit for her!”

Madelyn Knight placed fifth in the 100m hurdle finals, finishing in 13.94 seconds. She followed up with a seventh-place finish in the 400m hurdles in 1:02.40.

“Madi the Magnificent ended her College Career with her highest place finish outdoors,” Tucker added. “She came in ranked seventh in the 100HH and finished fifth, anytime you come out of the conference meet better than you went in is a blessing for sure”

Bradley Fillis placed sixth in hammer throw (58.71m) and shot put put (16.17m), while placing seventh in discus throw (50.04m).

“How about Brad sixth place in the hammer and SP this weekend and seventh in discus but a PR!” said Tucker. “He was ranked eighth or worse in all three events coming in and rose to the occasion during championship time. I am proud of him and Coach Maj. Great weekend for the throws squad!”

Tucker also looked forward to continuing the postseason competition in two weeks, “I promise you we are a better team than we finished today and we will never finish this low again!” We head to Arkansas in a week from Monday working to advance as many folks as we can.  The season is not over yet, we are not done!!!!”
