ATHENS, Ga. – Fifth-year senior Ian Grum reached the podium for the fourth-consecutive season as the University of Georgia swimming and diving teams moved up the standings Thursday at the 2024 Southeastern Conference Swimming & Diving Championships at the James E. Martin Aquatic Center.
With two days of competition remaining, the Georgia men are tied with Tennessee for second place with 569 points apiece. In the women’s standings, Georgia stands third with 498 points.
Grum finished second in the 400-yard individual medley with a season-best B-cut of 3:39.48, earning his second silver medal in the event (2022). The Atlanta native, who also won bronze medals in 2021 and 2023, posted the top prelims time at 3:40.48. Graduate Jake Magahey placed fifth in the 400y IM with a PB of 3:39.67, the fifth-fastest time in program history, while fifth-year Zach Hils finished 11th with a PB of 3:43.58.
The Georgia women’s top finish of the day came on the 1-meter springboard as senior Meghan Wenzel finished fourth with a score of 307.00, nearly earning the Bulldogs’ first diving medal since Olivia Ball took bronze in 2016. Wenzel also placed fourth in prelims with a score of 291.15. Sophomore Hannah Stumpf scored for the Bulldogs with a 12th-place score of 267.60.
In the 200y freestyle, Georgia posted an impressive performance with all 12 prelims competitors qualifying for the evening session. Freshman Tomas Koski finished fifth with a PB of 1:31.93, his second of the week and the third-fastest time in program history. Junior Reese Branzell turned in personal-best times in both sessions, including a sixth-place finals time of 1:32.26, the No. 5 time in program history. Graduate Bradley Dunham placed seventh at 1:32.79, following a PB of 1:32.77 in prelims, the sixth-fastest mark all-time.
On the women’s side, sophomore Shea Furse took seventh in the 200y free with a PB of 1:44.23, moving up 18 spots from her 25th-place finish last season at SECs. Junior Briana Roberson finished 12th with a season-best B-cut of 1:45.01, followed by Sloane Reinstein in 15th place at 1:45.40. In the ‘C’ final, freshman Helena Jones prevailed with a B-cut of 1:45.72.
Sophomore Ruard van Renen finished eighth in the 100y butterfly with a time of 46.20, following a PB of 45.84 in prelims, the fourth-fastest time in program history. In the consolation final, senior Wesley Ng won the ‘C’ final with a PB of 46.13, the No. 10 time in program history, with fifth-year Zach Franklin following in 18th with a PB of 46.38. In the opening women’s 400y IM, junior Mia Abruzzo won her second career SEC ‘B’ final in the event with a season-best B-cut of 4:13.20. Graduate Millie Sansome posted a new PB of 4:17.14 to finish 21st.
The SEC Championships continue Friday with the 200y butterfly, 100y backstroke, 100y breaststroke, men’s platform diving, and 400y medley relay. Friday’s prelims session starts at 10:30 a.m. EST, followed by finals at 6:30 p.m. EST.
