Baker McKenzie strengthens Banking & Finance practice with Financial Regulatory Partner | Newsroom

Baker McKenzie strengthens Banking & Finance practice as of 1 April 2024 with Dr Conrad Ruppel, who joins Baker McKenzie’s Frankfurt office as Financial Regulatory Partner from Ashurst.

Conrad is a financial market regulatory expert, who advises national and international financial service providers, banks, fund managers, custodians and institutional investors. His practice covers investment and banking supervisory law, including outsourcing, IT risks, sustainability/ESG, as well as advising on money laundering law. A particular focus of his work is on FinTech and digital assets projects.

“With Conrad, we are gaining a very experienced and excellently qualified colleague who will be a great addition to our banking practice. He is an accomplished team player who will strengthen our advice on complex international mandates and boost the capabilities of the global Baker McKenzie team. We warmly welcome Conrad and look forward to working with him,” commented Dr Oliver Socher, Head of Baker McKenzie’s German Banking & Finance Practice Group and part of the German management team.

More recently, Dr Conrad Ruppel advised Goldman Sachs on the development and implementation of the Digital Assets Platform (GS DAPTM), including the issuance of an innovative digital Euro bond by the European Investment Bank (EIB), which was issued using private blockchain technology and settled on a same-day basis between different network protocols (cross chain DvP). In addition, Conrad regularly advises on regulatory issues relating to tokenisation projects, capital market transactions and fund investments. He also assists clients with money laundering law issues and regulatory proceedings, for example with European supervisory authorities and the German Federal Financial Supervisory Authority (BaFin).”

“I am excited to join Baker McKenzie being a truly established global platform with a particular strength in advising on complex cross-border projects. I am very much looking forward to working with colleagues locally and in other offices to provide our clients with the best possible advice in an increasingly dynamic and innovative regulatory environment,” comments Dr Conrad Ruppel.

At Baker McKenzie, Conrad will reinforce the established financial regulatory team around Dr Manuel Lorenz and Manuel Metzner. The most recent addition to the Banking & Finance practice in the area of Restructuring & Insolvency was Dr Andrea Soprano as Counsel in February 2024. Baker McKenzie also recently boosted at partner level in Frankfurt with Dr Johannes Baumann in Corporate/M&A and previously in Düsseldorf with Patrick H. Wilkening in IT & IP and with Dr Jakub Lorys in Munich in Private Equity.
