In yet another blow to Havering’s financial stability, recent revelations shed light on the precarious state of the North East London (NEL) Integrated Care System (ICS). As the country grapples with 42 distinct ICS units, it appears that Havering’s situation within the NEL framework is far from optimistic.
The NEL ICS encompasses a cluster of areas, including Waltham Forest, Newham, Barking & Dagenham, Redbridge, City of London, Hackney, and Tower Hamlets. Despite the diversity and breadth of this region, NEL finds itself at the bottom of the funding hierarchy among all the Integrated Care Systems in London.
The financial disparity becomes glaring when we learn that NEL operates with the smallest budget compared to its London counterparts. With a meager budget of £4 billion, NEL faces a daunting £25 million deficit. This revelation is unfortunately not a unique occurrence, mirroring the financial challenges faced by the broader healthcare landscape in the country.
NEL ICS is not being complacent having identified £17 million in savings through efficiencies, and new ways of working.
The Havering Daily spoke with Cllr. Gillian Ford, Deputy Leader of the Council and Cabinet Member for Adults and Wellbeing who said, “These financial challenges highlight the need for careful planning and support. It is crucial for everyone involved to work together to find solutions and ensure the well-being of our community. The ongoing financial pressures Havering and its partners face focuses the mind on where there is duplication across the system, what has changed since services were first commissioned, and what needs to change. This is resulting in some really good practices and better outcomes for our residents. We now need to upscale some of the pilots to ensure even more people benefit”.
